Text files with the extensions .md, .markdown and .txt. Stilo reads UTF-8 and also opens Shift_JIS files. It always saves as UTF-8 without a byte order mark, so opening a Shift_JIS file and saving it converts the file to UTF-8.
This is most noticeable on the first launch. The list is the document browser provided by iOS, which asks iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive and any other services for their contents. The more services you are signed in to, and the slower the connection, the longer it takes. Stilo is not loading your documents, so the number and size of your files make no difference. Later launches are quicker.
Stilo has no library of its own. Documents are saved as plain .md files wherever you choose in the Files app: On My iPhone, iCloud Drive, or a service such as Dropbox or OneDrive. Other apps can open the same files.
Tap the file name in the centre of the navigation bar in the editor and a rename screen opens. You can also touch and hold a document in the browser and choose Rename. New documents are created as “Untitled.md”.
For cloud services other than iCloud Drive and On My iPhone, iOS does not tell apps the name of the service, so Stilo shows “Other Location”. Reading and writing work normally.
This happens when an organization's policy makes the location read-only. iOS reports neither the read-only state nor the failed save to the app, so Stilo cannot detect it. Copy the file to iCloud Drive or On My iPhone and edit it there.
Files in iCloud Drive sync automatically as long as both devices are online. If the same file was edited in two places and the versions diverged, Stilo shows a “Resolve Conflict” screen when you open it. Choose the version to keep; the others are deleted.
Open Settings and tap “Restore Purchases” at the bottom. You need to be signed in with the same Apple Account you used to buy. One purchase covers every iPhone and iPad signed in with that account.
A one-time purchase. There is no monthly or yearly charge.
Editing, preview, find and replace, reading and writing files, character and word counts, and HTML export are all free, as is the ruby notation button. Pro adds vertical text preview, ruby conversion in the preview, page counts and goals, PDF export, and themes with font import.
Not as a Stilo feature, because iOS already provides one. Touch and hold the Stilo icon on the Home Screen and choose “Require Face ID”, or Touch ID depending on your device. You will then be asked to authenticate each time you open the app.
Check three things: that Stilo Pro is active, that “Convert ruby notation” is on under East Asian Typography in Settings, and that you are looking at the preview rather than the editor. The editor always shows the raw notation. Write it as |北海道《ほっかいどう》. When the base text is all kanji you can omit the |, as in 彗星《すいせい》.
That is intentional. Tables, code blocks and images become unreadable when rotated, so those blocks keep their horizontal layout.
Half-width characters rotate in vertical writing. Two-digit numbers can be kept upright with tate-chu-yoko, which you can toggle under East Asian Typography. Longer numbers and Latin words stay rotated. Full-width digits such as １２ stay upright at any length.
Settings → East Asian Typography → Page unit offers 400- and 200-character Japanese manuscript sheets, 600-character Taiwanese gaozhi, 200-character Korean wongoji, and 250 words per page. Choose Custom to set your own characters per line and lines per page.
.ttf, .otf and .ttc, up to five fonts. .woff and .woff2 are web-only formats that iOS cannot use, so they are rejected.
It means the font has no glyph forms for vertical writing. Punctuation and brackets will face the wrong way in vertical mode. The font works normally in horizontal mode.
An imported font is embedded in the PDFs you export. Please check each font's license yourself, including whether embedding is permitted. Stilo does not distribute fonts.
Choose the paper under Settings → Export → Paper size: A4, Letter (8.5 × 11 in) or Legal (8.5 × 14 in). The default follows your region, so it is Letter in North America.
Orientation follows the writing direction. With vertical preview on, the chosen paper is turned landscape; with it off, the paper stays portrait. Switch between Horizontal and Vertical in the preview before exporting.
A standalone HTML file cannot reference a font stored inside the app on your device. Only the font name is kept, so the font applies if the reader's device has it and falls back to a default otherwise.
